Make a Rainbow: Exploring Light and Refraction
Ages 6-1210-15 minutesEasy Difficulty
About This Activity
Learn how light bends through water to create a rainbow, just like raindrops in the sky after a storm.
Materials Needed
- A clear glass of water
- A sunny window
- A white piece of paper
Safety Notes
- Handle the glass carefully to avoid spills or breakage.
- Ensure the glass is placed securely on a flat surface.
Instructions
- Fill a clear glass with water.
- Place it near a sunny window where sunlight can shine through.
- Hold a white piece of paper on the opposite side of the glass.
- Observe the rainbow appearing on the paper as sunlight bends through the water.
How It Works
Sunlight contains all the colors of the rainbow, even though it looks white. When it passes through water, the light bends and separates into different colors, a process called refraction. This is the same effect that happens when sunlight passes through raindrops, creating a rainbow in the sky.
Tips for Success
- Try using a flashlight if it’s not sunny outside.
- Experiment with different angles to see how the rainbow changes.
- Use a larger container for a bigger rainbow effect.
